Somatic Therapy in New York City
Body-based approaches to trauma healing that work directly with the nervous system — releasing what the body has been holding so you can feel safe, connected, and alive again.

What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing that recognizes trauma is not just stored in the mind — it is stored in the body. When the nervous system is overwhelmed by experiences it cannot process, it holds those experiences as chronic tension, hypervigilance, numbness, dissociation, pain, and deeply ingrained reactive patterns. These adaptations were once protective responses. Over time, they become the source of suffering.
Rather than relying solely on cognitive processing or talk-based insight, somatic therapy works directly with bodily sensations, movement, breath, postural patterns, and the autonomic nervous system to release stored trauma and restore regulation. This is the missing piece for many people who have gained intellectual understanding through years of traditional therapy but continue to feel stuck, anxious, or disconnected from their bodies and emotions.
At Double Diamond Wellness, our somatic approach is grounded in the understanding that the body keeps the score — and that the body holds the key to healing what the mind alone cannot resolve.
Who Benefits from Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is particularly valuable for those whose symptoms have a strong bodily component — or for anyone who senses that their healing needs to go deeper than cognitive understanding:
Many clients arrive saying, "I understand my trauma intellectually, but my body hasn't caught up." Somatic therapy bridges that gap — bringing the body into the healing conversation.
What a Somatic Therapy Session Looks Like
Somatic sessions at Double Diamond Wellness are experiential rather than purely verbal. Hong's approach integrates several body-based modalities:
Transforming Touch®
A neuro-physiological modality that works with the body's innate capacity for healing. Through gentle, attuned contact, TT addresses the earliest layers of developmental experience — including pre-verbal and pre-cognitive patterns that shape attachment, safety, and self-regulation. Hong is a certified Transforming Touch practitioner.
Somatic Tracking & Awareness
Guided attention to bodily sensations, tensions, and movements that carry emotional meaning. Rather than interpreting from the outside, Hong helps you develop an internal awareness that becomes a lifelong resource for self-regulation.
Nervous System Regulation
Working directly with your autonomic nervous system — helping it move from states of fight, flight, freeze, or collapse into a window of tolerance where processing and integration become possible.
Embodied Integration
Connecting somatic experiences to emotional and relational patterns, helping the body release what it has been holding and build new capacities for safety, connection, and aliveness.
Benefits of Somatic Therapy
Nervous System Reset
Restoration of healthy autonomic regulation — moving from chronic fight-flight-freeze into a baseline of safety and calm.
Trauma Release
Physical release of stored tension, protective bracing, and frozen energy that cognitive therapy cannot access.
Embodied Safety
Rebuilding the felt sense of being safe in your own body — the foundation for all other healing.
Emotional Access
Restoring the capacity to feel emotions fully without being overwhelmed — reconnecting with joy, tenderness, and aliveness.
Relational Capacity
Increased capacity for intimacy, trust, and authentic connection as the nervous system learns to co-regulate.
Lasting Resilience
Development of internal resources that sustain healing long after therapy ends — a body that knows how to return to center.
The Integration Process
Somatic healing is an ongoing process of building capacity. Each session builds on the last, gradually expanding your nervous system's window of tolerance and your body's capacity to hold more experience without overwhelm.
At Double Diamond Wellness, somatic therapy is not practiced in isolation. It is woven into a comprehensive integrative approach that also includes EMDR 2.0 for memory reprocessing, trauma-informed psychotherapy for relational and cognitive work, and when clinically indicated, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy.
Sam Liebowitz's emotional healing work also operates at the somatic level, addressing stored emotions and reactive patterns through compassionate, body-aware methods — offering another dimension of support.
